Game & tools developer. I build editors, games and desktop software, mostly for s&box in C#.

About

I'm Joshua Diggs (themightypooh), a game and tools developer in Norfolk, VA. I build complete things: Geppetto (a modelling and animation toolkit), games, desktop apps and custom tools. You get it finished and tested, not half-done. You tell me what you want. I make it exist.

Geppetto

Editor tools for s&box: model, rig and animate without leaving the engine.

Effigy: a parametric modeller

  • Five workspaces: CAD with an editable feature tree, Model (edit, sculpt, retopo), Paint, Rig and Clothing. Exports a real .vmdl.
  • Full edit-mode toolkit: extrude, inset, bevel, loop cut, knife, bridge, live modifiers, UVs and weight painting.
  • Clothing is built from the body's bones, so it refits when the body changes. Also exports live cloth.
  • The .effigy format is plain text with one line per feature, so it diffs cleanly in git.
  • The modelling kernel has no engine dependency. It runs headlessly from C#, build scripts or a CLI, backed by a large test suite.

Marionette: an animation editor

  • Pose bones, keyframe with easing curves and auto-key, then bake clips or play them in game.
  • Two-bone IK, joint limits, and prop collision while posing.
  • Fits a custom model to the player skeleton and writes a walkable test scene in one click.

wavegoo

My own desktop shell for KDE Plasma on Wayland, written from scratch in Quickshell (QML + GLSL). This is it, running in your browser: the same shaders, the same layout, shrunk to fit.

Tap the orb for the start menu and drag things around, or open it fullscreen below.

Hover the bar, click the orb for the start menu, drag the cabinet, hourglass and counter anywhere, drag a note onto a drawer, click the hourglass. Best on a big screen.

Midnight AM

*Published, so technically complete. But I shall return.

A cosy first-person game where you host a late-night radio show over an 8-hour shift in real time: take phone-in callers, spin vinyl and decorate the studio.

  • An in-game retro computer with around 20 apps: a casino, chess, minesweeper, a terminal, a mixer and a vinyl press.
  • A built-in synth engine, song sequencer, voice recorder and WAV writer.
  • Instruments to collect and play, with effects pedals that change how each one sounds.
  • A shop for decorating the studio however you like: wallpaper, flooring, speakers and more.
In-game: the ON AIR sign over the booth wall In-game: blackjack in the computer's casino app In-game: ten effects pedals, from overdrive and reverb to fuzz and delay

Survey Sentence

A prisoner, sealed alone in a windowless pod, finds and prints subjects using a sonar scope and a 3D printer. It's a PS1-style remake of my earlier game Deep Survey, which you can play now.

  • The sonar scope turns an outside camera into echolocation through a depth post-process, displayed on a curved CRT.
  • A true first-person body, with animation takes checked for how fast they swing the camera.
  • A layered sound director with ducking and loudness (LUFS) targets.
The Linden Arcade at night in s&box: a brick theatre front with a neon script sign, a marquee reading TOKENS 4 FOR $1 and PRIZE COUNTER INSIDE, and a crashed flying saucer on the roof

Inside The Arcade

A first-person retro arcade where every cabinet runs its own playable game, and many let you go inside them.

  • Climb into the games. Win the MIND-LINK headset at the prize counter and GO INSIDE puts you in the machine: the sub in Torpedo Alley, the bass boat in Lunker Lake, the kitchen in Cover Fire.
  • See through the cabinets. Win the X-ray specs and look straight through any machine's shell at the boards, motors, CRT and wiring inside, with markers that explain each part.
  • 28 real games, not props. A kitchen brawler, a rally stage, a shmup, a zombie light-gun holdout, skee-ball and a physics claw machine.
  • Four pinball tables on custom physics, each in its own era of cabinet, with dot-matrix and video displays.
  • A few hours after school. Feed tokens, win tickets, trade them at the prize counter, and be at the doors when Mom comes to pick you up.
  • Every kid on the floor is generated: one low-poly body, one 256 px atlas, thousands of clip-checked looks.
  • Each game is tested headlessly with simulations and soak runs, and the packed floor holds 60 fps.
The prize counter: the attendant behind a glass case of penny candy, paddle balls and toys, with top prizes in a padded display under a neon PRIZES sign The view from the balcony: a crawl tube sweeping down to the floor, a Gyro 360 ride and cabinets under pennant flags The whole cast lined up: the player, the kids, the moms, the cooks, the prize-counter attendant and the shambler

Secret stash: psst, wanna see a brain learn?

AI from scratch · play with it

Pinoch

An AI I built completely from scratch that learns to talk the way a kid does, starting from nothing. Pinoch is its body, and he grows up as it learns. This is what he looks like before he's been given anything: no lessons and not even his first words.

This is the real viewer on a two-minute demo run; on my desktop it follows the live training and I can talk to him. Tap to drop, hold to stream, pick a colour up top, and click Pinoch to pet him or right-click to poke.

NPC brain

How a model like this drives a game NPC. Vision and hearing feed Kev, a small fast classifier: obvious stuff (a grenade beep, "jump") becomes an action straight away, like a reflex. Anything that needs thought goes to the language model with mission and memory, and comes back out as speech.

Made it here? You must be interested in finding out more about me!

I'm 30 and I live in Norfolk, Virginia.

How I actually work: I design the systems, direct AI-assisted development and review the code live as it's written, so I catch mistakes before they land. Then I test everything myself, in game, until it's right. Geppetto, Midnight AM and my whole desktop were built this way.

What I bring: the vision, the taste, and the patience to go back and forth on details for as long as it takes. I'll build your idea just as happily as my own.

Why this, why now: I've decided to kick my projects and portfolio into overdrive and get myself out there and hired or commissioned to do what I love doing: making things that people will use, remember, or just enjoy having. Them being satisfied with it is what satisfies me.

Right now: I'm looking for work: freelance, contract or full-time. I need the money and rent doesn't wait, so this isn't a weekend hobby, it's my full-time work now. I've got plenty of free time, I pick things up fast, and you'll have my full attention until you're happy with it.
